How to Make Soft Sugar Cookies That Are Perfect for the Holidays

- Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using. Mix well.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture gradually, mixing until combined.
- Stir in the milk to help form a soft dough.
- Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll into balls. Place on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each.
- Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your palm.
- Decorate with colored sugar or sprinkles before baking, if not frosting later.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are just lightly golden. Do not overbake.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
