Old Fashioned German Fruit Cake A Classic Fruitcake Recipe with Dried Fruits

Posted on

Old-Fashioned German Fruit Cake is a dense, rich, and moist holiday dessert that brings warmth and nostalgia to every bite. Known for its bold flavors and long shelf life, this classic cake is made with dried fruits, nuts, warm spices, and often a hint of brandy or rum. Unlike the overly sweet, sticky versions that many associate with fruitcake, the traditional German variety—often called Früchtekuchen or Obstkuchen—is well-balanced, aromatic, and incredibly satisfying.

The cake typically features a base of brown sugar, molasses, and butter, which creates a deep caramel-like foundation. Into that, chopped nuts and a mix of dried fruits—such as raisins, currants, figs, apricots, and candied citrus peel—are folded in, along with warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The result is a hearty, flavorful cake that gets better with time, as the spices and fruits continue to meld.

Ideal for gifting, entertaining, or serving with coffee or tea, this fruit cake is a centerpiece of many German holiday tables. For modern hosting, serve it alongside festive sides like cheesy biscuit appetizers or seasonal bakes from holiday appetizer ideas. Whether made weeks in advance or the day before, this timeless cake is steeped in tradition and bursting with old-world flavor.

Old Fashioned German Fruit Cake A Classic Fruitcake Recipe with Dried Fruits

Old-Fashioned German Fruit Cake is a rich, spiced holiday loaf packed with dried fruits, warm spices, and nuts, baked into a moist, dense cake that gets better with time. It’s a traditional favorite perfect for holiday tables, gift-giving, or cozy winter desserts.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups mixed dried fruits such as raisins, currants, chopped dates, or figs
  • 1/2 cup chopped candied cherries optional
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan or a tube pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract, dried fruits, candied cherries (if using), and chopped nuts. Fold everything in gently until evenly distributed.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 60 to 75 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil during the last 20 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, wrap tightly in plastic wrap or foil. This cake can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for several days and improves in flavor over time.

Notes

  • Soak dried fruits overnight for maximum flavor
  • Use molasses and brown sugar for deep caramel notes
  • Add buttermilk for tenderness or swap for orange juice
  • Brush with brandy or fruit juice during storage for added moisture
  • Pair with cheesy biscuit appetizers, pull-apart bread, or garlic bread for a complete holiday spread
